All About Me

I’m a twenty something married writer/student from Trondheim, Norway, although I consider Liverpool, in the UK northwest as my home.

Before Christmas hubby and i returned to Liverpool after 2 years in the Middle East, Abu Dhabi to be exact.

At the moment we are both job hunting and settling down to life in a cooler climate, it’s so nice to have seasons again! While abroad I started cross stitching and am now thoroughly addicted, so much so that most of my posts these days have to do with stitching 🙂 Over the last months I’ve been neglecting my writing, I just haven’t been feeling like it but recently some ideas have been buzzing around in my head waiting to be written down. Maybe 2011 will be the year!

Hope you enjoy my blog, and please do leave comments xxx

I am so happy I clicked on the link to this blog in your signature at AHA. I love reading about the inner workings of the minds of people who love JAFF. I am constantly amazed at how much we all have in common. I will look forward to your next entry and that top ten list.

Thanks :0) It’s always incouraging to have people read what you write and comment. I imagine it must be much like the brilliant writers on AHA feel when we comment on their stories.

I just happened 2 stumble onto this site and was thrilled to find a cross stitcher in Abu Dhabi! 🙂

I’m just getting started on this myself and am itching to try my hand at some patterns i found.

I was wondering if you could give me some tips on getting started like where to buy floss in Abu Dhabi, which brand to use, etc.? I already know about Green Branch but do you know of any other stores? Also can you give me an estimate of how much floss/fabric costs?

I have a friend’s birthday coming up soon and would love to stitch up something for her. Would really appreciate your help.

    Thanks a lot!

Hi bee, lovely to have you stumbling by 🙂 To be honest there aren’t a lot of shops here that carry cross stitching supplies. Green Branch is the best, they mainly carry DMC cottons (2 dhs), DMC varigated, DMC Light Effects, DMC Metallics (all 7 dhs). They don’t have the linen, satin or variations DMC.
They also carry some anchor cottons (2 dhs), don’t think it’s the full range but I’ve never checked to be honest. Whether you stitch with DMC or Anchor is really a matter of preference as the quality of the floss is closely matched.
As for fabric, there really isn’t much choice here. Green Branch has aida from 11-count to 18 count. Mostly there is only the choice between white and cream, although I think in 11 count they have some blue and red aida. I’ve only bought aida a couple of times and if I remember right I bought a 1m x 1.4m piece of 16 count aida before xmas which cost me 90 dhs. I have yet to find a shop here that carries evenweave, so if you stumble upon some please let me know.
There is another shop in Madinat Zayed, called Malik’s (or something like that) but they didn’t have any cross stitching things that Green branch didn’t have and the prices were the same. I know there are some shops in Dubai, but I’ve never been to them so have no idea what kinda things are there.
For things i can’t find here ordering online works really well. My one stop shop for supplies is SewandSo (in fact just put in a rather large order today)
You can find most things there and the shipping to the UAE is very promt and costs £3.95 (I assume if you order something really heavy, like a stand or lamp it might be more but if it’s just the normal stuff this seems to be the set price). At the moment it’s quite handy as the british pound is a bit weak so you’ll get more for your money.
Please let me know if there is anything else i can do to help, and if you want to meet up for a coffe and/or some stitching let me know 🙂

      Good luck

Could you help. I have been able to get hold of the cross stitch design for the Hug cushion and am now trying to get Kiss. Unfortunately I can not get hold of the instructions to put this together and as a nubee to cross stitching will need all the help I can get to complete this fabulous design. Would you have a copy of the instructions that you could share with me. I cant wait to start on this new craft and I am one of those who want to start on something they love rather than something easy. Wish me luck.
